Does she like hemorrhaging cash for repairs?
The most reliable and least expensive car to maintain on your list is the W210.
Why does she insist on owning an old luxury vehicle?

5-Series or S60 please. The XJ8 is a timeless and classy look, but I’m suspicious of its registration being a year overdue for renewal though. Seems like something is wrong with it.

You’re providing her with free mechanical services, right?
Safest bet here might be the 210 - but clean those headlights.

I am a multi brand master tech, ASE master with L1. It’ll be fine. Volvo or Mercedes are lead candidates since I work for them currently (4 brand dealership)

Understood. I think you’ll agree that the W210 is the most reliable and solid of the bunch. It might look the most dated, but it represents a time when Mercedes still cared about build quality.

agreed. It would be a straight replacement with less mileage. I’ll give it the good look over indeed and clean those headlights lol.

That 540i needs timing guides, he states there’s metal flakes in the oil. Which means there’s chunks of guide sitting in the oil pan.

I’ve heard less than good stories about first year 211s. If she loved the 210, might be a deal.
Maybe have a dashcam installed too, I’d have one if I lived there.

my fams vehicles have priority over mine :]
Heck, I remember when I’d have my box of many cleaning items for my cars. Every couple days vacuum them, wash them, wax/polish. Lol super rare that I do that to my stuff in the last so many years. Would do it for them in a heartbeat doe.

Those are all highly questionable choices... but if you like investing in the local economy via mechanics these are all great choices.

W210 only if the car hasn’t been driven in a place with salt everywhere.
Certain runs had issues with front suspension collapse, due to water and salt getting behind the poorly applied sealing mastic and corroding the spot welds for the spring perches.
The E300 that I used to have didn’t have a corrosion problem, but you don’t know it until a ) you remove and replace the mastic to inspect (and do a seam weld in the process) or b ) your front suspension collapses.

Yep, fortunately Uly lives in TX. I had a 210 E55 for many years, but I am on the west coast, also no real rust worries.
202s suffer from that same spring perch issue, I think. MBs from that era also seem to go at the wheelarches in harsh climates.

I’ve always kind of liked the S Types and I believe that the later ones and the V6s both tended to be a better ownership experience. so outside of the mercs which is where I’m guessing she is leaning, that would be one I’d look at.

agreed, she has a thing for those tanks but the Jag, maybe even the e39 are the only other maybes. Don’t know too much about the S-Type but being in te last year or so of production is key to buy (all bugs out). Plus, great mileage

No Jags! The S-type is shit, it’s really a dressed up Ford. The XJ truthfully isn’t too bad, it’s just not as good as the others. I do love the way they look though, and that big inline six is sweet. The ergonomics are little weird, depending on the size of the driver. I always feel a little cramped.
S60s are pretty good of course, but I’d be curious about timing belt, trans service, front bushings/strut mounts, engine mounts, etc... all the shit you already know to look for :)
On the Benzes, we love the W210, I don’t like the W211 as much, they’re not as quality a car, the interiors feel shitty ( I believe AMGtech will second this). But at least the ‘03 still has the old M112 V6 so no balance shaft issues. The W203 C-class isn’t really horrible, they’re decent mechanically but lots of annoying plastic shit breaks and they feel like shit compared to a good 3-series.
The E39 is good in either form, but that particular 540 is scary. Rebuilt title, metal flakes in oil? And at 139k, it’s just in time for timing chain guides. The M62 is a damn good engine though, other than the chain guides. The 530 is a damn good car, and that’s low miles. Might need a valve cover and serp belt rollers, do a trans service, and rock on. The plastic cooling system parts will need to be done too, but I’d drive one of those no questions asked, those are by far my favorite of the options you show.
Bottom line, W210 or 6 cylinder E39. But you know this ;)

Yes, from what I’ve heard. A buddy runs a British specialty shop and absolutely hates them. We work on one, a 4.0 V8. It’s a pain in the ass.
